Top 10 List – Black Reptiles

1. Mexican Black Kingsnake

Mexican Black Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula nigrita)
This beautiful snake from Northwestern Sinaloa, Mexico, and small parts of Arizona is sought after due to it’s all over black colour, and the fact that it’s relatively easy to care for in captivity.

2. Crested Gecko

Crested Gecko (Correlophus ciliatus)
These popular pets can come in array of colours, and one of the rarer colours is black. This little gecko even has beautiful gray eyes!

3. Ball Python

Ball Python (Python Regius)
One of the most popular snakes for beginners, ball pythons come in hundreds, if not thousands of different morphs. This morph is called the super cinnamon, and gives the snake a black, almost purple-black colour.

5. Black Girdled Lizard

Black Girdled Lizard (Cordylus niger)
These spiny lizards are quite unique and only found on Table Mountain that’s located on the Cape Peninsula and a second, isolated population near Langebaan. It is thought they are so dark as to help them soak up the heat.

Mali Uromastyx (Uromastyx maliensis)
Mali uromastyx are a short, rather chubby lizard with an amazingly strong spiky tail. These lizards are often kept as pets and also come in an array of colours, one of which is the beautiful black shown in the picture.

7. Black Rat Snake

Black Rat Snake (Pantherophis obsoletus)
Black rat snakes are the next of the black reptiles on this list. They are suprisingly good climbers, and are part of the constrictor groups. This means they constrict their prey before consuming it.

8. Black Tree Monitor

Black tree Monitor (Varanus beccarii)
These black reptiles are found on the Aru Islands off of New Guinea. Unsurprisingly, they are extremely well adapted to living in trees, which is where they spend the majority of their time.

9. Black-Eyed Gecko

Black-Eyed Gecko (Hoplodactylus kahutarae)
While not the darkest black reptile on the list, this gecko is still unique and beautiful in it’s own right. This gecko is the highest-altitude lizard species in New Zealand, and as it’s name says, has beautiful pitch black eyes.

10. Ring-Necked Snake

These beautiful snakes are a gorgeous black colour along the top of their body, with a white ring around their neck – as their name suggests. However, they  have a surprise waiting – under their belly/tail can range from a bright orange to a bright red colour, making this snake a unique beauty.
